Top Things to Do - Big Island of Hawaii
The Big Island of Hawaii, is a great treat you can give yourself and your family
Are you looking for an experience under water? Wanting to touch the Hawaiian ocean bed without actually getting wet? The Atlantis Submarine Kona offers under water Submarine rides that you can enjoy with your family. Experience the rainbow fish and the corals beneath the turquoise waters. You can get your tickets from the store located in the Courtyard by Marriott King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel on Ali’i Drive.
After this unique experience, venture out on a walk along the Ali’i Drive which will never disappoint you. You can find plethora of food joints, beautiful views and boutiques. The fresh ocean breeze and the tropical rain is some icing on shaved ice here at Kona!
Next, if you are looking at exploring some active volcanoes and a little history on how this island formed, you must visit the Volcanoes National Park. The steam vents from the earth’s interior are a natural spa in itself and the yellowish Sulphur deposits and fumes is something rare. Although wouldn’t recommend long exposures to these, there is no better evidence than this that the area is still an active volcano. One of the boards there also read the story of a man who passed away from burns, stepping into the soil there. The footprint is still visible till today.
If you are a coffee lover, make time to visit the Kona Joe Coffee. This is a private coffee estate where you can enjoy a fresh cup of coffee with a great view and nature in its pristine form.
Take time to visit the Akaka State Falls, if you are looking for more green to come. The park is about 11 miles north of Hilo. It is a 442-foot-tall waterfall and is named after Chief 'Akaka-o-ka-nī'au-oi'o-i-ka-wao, grandson of Kūlanikapele and Kīakalohia. On your way back from the falls, enjoy some tender coconut water, mangoes and some sugar cane from the local fruit vendor.
Another attraction at the Big Island is the Legends of Hawaii Luau Show where you are welcomed with garlands and this kind of feels really special. This is a traditional Hawaiian party with lots of food and great entertainment. There is lots of dancing, role plays telling ancient Hawaiian stories and a lot of emphasis on ALOHA and Mahalo. This show is offered at the Hilton Waikoloa Village which is an entire city in itself.
When you visit the Big Island, these places could add to your list and enrich your experience. On my visit to Hawaii, I learned that the Hawaiians are proud of their rich culture and land and never forget to say Mahalo as an expression of gratitude!
