Originals By M Carlen

Artist Bio

A Southern California native, she was born and raised in Pasadena, California.  She developed her passion for art from her paternal grandmother.  As a child and throughout her teen years, she would travel to Whidbey Island, Washington to visit her grandmother and grandfather.  Michelle’s grandma was a professional watercolorist on the island for many years.

It was through these years that Michelle learned watercolor from her.  Michelle shares that the memories of them painting together in her grandma’s studio are truly priceless. While Michelle developed other mediums through classes and instruction, Michelle claims that her grandmother gave her the tools and guidance that enabled her to be where she is today.

Michelle continued in her adulthood to purse her practice of painting watercolors and acrylics. She finds capturing nature to be fun and enjoyable with watercolors.  Acrylics speak to the imaginative side of her, and she shares this through abstracts. Her commissioned pieces are always something she takes pride in completing as it gives the owner of the work a sense of connection to something greater.

Michelle is an active member of the Buenaventura Art Association, Carpinteria Art Center, and the San Dieguito Art Guild.  You can find her work on exhibit and for sale in shops along the California Coast from San Diego to Pismo Beach.  She is available for commissioned works especially for travel location settings and pet portraiture.

It is her hope you find a piece here that really speaks to your soul.  Whether interested in purchasing the original or reproduction on various types of medium of your selection, Michelle hopes her art brings you joy for many years to come!

The Story of her Sea Glass Jewelry

Michelle lives in Carpinteria, California and takes walks to the beach every day. She has always collected seashells but about 4 years ago, she started to notice the sea glass pieces particularly at low tide. She collected hundreds of pieces, mostly white, green and brown. She found a few rare ones from cornflower blue to amethyst, amber to turquoise. She sat there one day figuring that she wanted to share with others the beauty of these pieces and then…boom! She decided to apply her wire wrapping skills which she learned in a class at the Art Center in town. She got silver, gold, and rose wire and started wrapping away. Sharing on social media she has had several people ask her to purchase them.
